FA WOMEN’S PREMIER LEAGUE

Sunday 7th September 2014

SOUTHAMPTON SAINTS LFC - 2

FOREST GREEN ROVERS LFC - 3

Rovers made the long journey to Southampton, and after a hard fought game , returned with all three points, to maintain their good start to the season.

After a fairly even first 20 minutes the deadlock was broken by Ellie Olds, who met Amy Baker’s free kick at the far post, and bundled the ball into the net. The home side quickly equalised when their captain was allowed to latch onto a through ball, and calmly lob the advancing Georgina Macey to make it 1-1. With half time rapidly approaching, Naomi Marshall, who had only been on the pitch 10 minutes, due to Sarah Stacey having to go off after feeling unwell, latched onto a long diagonal pass and thundered a long range effort past the keeper to restore the visitors lead. To add to this Forest Green quickly won a corner, and in the last few seconds of the half Sophie Okey guided a header into the far corner to make it 3-1 at the break.

The Saints upped their game in the second half, and they quickly claimed a second goal, with an identical move to their first score, except their captain side footed this one home after breaking the offside trap. A tense second half ensued, which was finally brought to a close with Rovers gaining a good away win, to maintain their challenge at the top of the table.

About FGR

We’re a club that looks to the future, but our identity is forged from a rich 128-year history. Founded in 1889, we’re one of the oldest football clubs in the world.

In 2017, we were promoted to the Football League for the first time in our history – which means we can spread our sustainability message to an even bigger audience. FIFA recently described us as the greenest football club in the world. That’s quite an accolade, and it shows how we’ve been able to bring together football and environmental consciousness at the highest levels of the game.
