FGR v Exeter: match forecast

Postby The Old TomCat » Sun Sep 03, 2017 8:09 pm

FGR at home to Exeter on Saturday: another local game for the BBC West television area.
Exeter sit top of table with 13 pts from 3 home wins, 1 away win and an away draw.
[h] Cambridge 1-0
[a] Swindon 1-1
[h] Lincoln 1-0
[a] Cheltenham 4-3
[h] Newport 1-0
Reuben Reid is Exeter’s leading goal scorer with 4 goals, the same number as our own Doidgy.

Exeter are having a good run of results following on from back end of last season where they finished 5th in table although they lost play off final to Blackpool.
That season they had 7 away wins, 3 away draws and 13 away losses.

FGR have yet to fully show their potential so far this season and game against the league leaders would be a splendid opportunity to demonstrate that we are in a false position near bottom of table.

As an aside I hope TNL is packed to the rafters for local pride. Cheltenham’s average home attendance is a mere 5 more than FGR: Cheltenham ... 2,898 & FGR ... 2,893.
Gone are the days when they recorded 1,000 or more regulars to Whaddon Road than attendees at TNL.

1-1 draw. That's about as positive as I can be against a team I think may be champions this year, but I think home form will be better than away.

Apart from the 4-3 win against Cheltenham, Exeter are not prolific goal scorers.
In the Cheltenham match, the home side had a player sent off and Exeter scored from free kick to help ensure victory.
Reading the match report it seems as if Cheltenham were Exeter's equal until then.
Therefore, despite FGR's current defensive problems, I'm thinking Exeter will not score more than 1.
I'm convinced our forward line will come good and get the luck that has been missing so far.
Therefore FGR 3-1 Exeter

About FGR

We’re a club that looks to the future, but our identity is forged from a rich 128-year history. Founded in 1889, we’re one of the oldest football clubs in the world.

In 2017, we were promoted to the Football League for the first time in our history – which means we can spread our sustainability message to an even bigger audience. FIFA recently described us as the greenest football club in the world. That’s quite an accolade, and it shows how we’ve been able to bring together football and environmental consciousness at the highest levels of the game.
