Grimsby v FGR: match forecast

Postby The Old TomCat » Sun Jul 29, 2018 7:23 am

An away game at Grimsby for first match of season is seemingly quirky after having played them for last game of last season.
Grimsby have a very good win record against FGR including the double over us last season and the Wembley play-off final. Weeks before that last game Grimsby were well mired in the relegation battle but then won four of their final five games. Therefore not surprising they finished 18th and above FGR in EFL2. Nearly all that success can be credited to the late season appointment of Michael Jolley as manager. He is highly regarded within the football community as an excellent coach. Whether he gets found out on Saturday or continues his honeymoon period remains to be seen.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
FGR have played 8 PSFs and only lost to Leeds United:

Brimscombe & Thrupp 0-2 FGR
Reid 2

Torquay Utd 1-4 FGR
Winchester, Archibald, O/G, Brown

Weston-S-Mare 6-6 FGR
Archibald 2, Doidge 1 +2P, Grubb

FGR 1-2 Leeds United
Grubb

Swindon Supermarine 2-2 FGR
Ogunleye, Laird

FGR 1-0 Bristol Rovers
Doidge (P)

Hereford United 1-3 FGR
Rawson, Reid (2)

Wrexham 2-3 FGR
Archibald, Williams, Mills

PSFs are not the definitive guide to season ahead but nevertheless it’s pleasing to note that FGR have scored in every PSF: 22 goals by eleven different goalscorers.
Reid & Doidge & Archibald (4), Grubb (2), Winchester, Brown, Rawson, Williams, Mills, Laird, Ogunleye plus an OG
The defence has not had such a good time but there are signs it will greatly improve.

With so many player transfer changes during summer it is unhelpful to offer a form guide.

My forecast is an away draw with Doidgey scoring equalising goal.

Hi guys,

Start of season on Saturday and I’ll be running the annual Prediction competition. I’ve amalgamated both Pitchfork’s monthly competition and the weekly one.
With a new beginning is a new type of competition which hopefully will be simpler to enter.

All I’m asking is for predictas to forecast FGR’s game result, either win, draw or loss.
A correct forecast is worth 5 pts. Zero points if wrong.
However I’m offering predictas a chance of doubling their score by use of a Bonus should they feel ultra confident of their prediction. Although beware an incorrect Bonus forecast incurs a penalty of minus 5 points.

There will be one point for every goal scored by a nominated goal scorer. If someone thinks the game will end goalless then nominate ‘none’ for a point.

I will be retaining the traditional much loved home attendance forecast figures. However I’ve cut the categories down to three: 3 points for attendance within 50 ; 2 points for within 100 ; & one point for within 200 fans at game.

Simple :) Basically all anybody need do is post something like:
Win v Grimsby plus Bonus. Doidge to score.
[That would be 11 points if FGR win 1-0 with a Doidgie goal
but minus five points if Grimsby win and FGR don’t score]

This is a paid competition. We already have 16 confirmed predictas so there will be at least two cash prizes per month. And I think we will have at least £50 for winner of season’s best score. Therefore well worth the £10 entry sub. :)
[ps All winnings will be paid out at end of season by SC]

I’ll run competition for all comers during August but drop those who haven’t paid at start of September.
Please drop your money off at Reception in an envelope addressed PREDICTION COMPETITION and remember to add your moniker somewhere so I know who it’s from 

My forecast: Grimsby draw & CD to score.

Hi Tom

My wife is still really poorly so I'm pretty housebound and reliant on family cover right now....so it'll be nervy listens with Bob & Billy H & Co ....as i won't be at first few games for sure .I did get to watch the Leeds game on LUTV .....

I’ve just had a chat with a predicta who asked if he could post his forecasts in advance whenever he has a holiday planned.

Yes.

However if anybody does that could I ask them to use following formula such as:
FGR v Cheltenham: Win plus Bonus, Doidge, attendance 3333 and add it whatever would be the current Game Forecast thread.

Grimsby win (unfortunately). But think Grubb will tear their defence apart once.

Hi guys,

This prediction competition is starting to take shape although a number of predictas have still to forecast:

Greeners
Linfield Rover
RedUnited
Sadie
TimB
Tomiswalking
Tommo
VBM
plus the anonymous predicta who is still to reveal his/her name

Early days and as usual I badly explain instructions. Sorry.
I’ve been caught out by Sliver Surfer who I think has indicated a FGR win but I’m not sure.
I just want the FGR forecast result whether it be win, loss or draw.

And Football Poet you’ve forgotten to add a nominated goalscorer.

BTW Pitchfork is running the annual ‘Football League Position 2019’
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=95342
Most of the predictas have paid the £5 to enter this competition but again only a small number of forecasts submitted.

That £5 also includes entry into FGR Leading goalscorer 2018-19.

About FGR

We’re a club that looks to the future, but our identity is forged from a rich 128-year history. Founded in 1889, we’re one of the oldest football clubs in the world.

In 2017, we were promoted to the Football League for the first time in our history – which means we can spread our sustainability message to an even bigger audience. FIFA recently described us as the greenest football club in the world. That’s quite an accolade, and it shows how we’ve been able to bring together football and environmental consciousness at the highest levels of the game.
