Steve Arnold has signed for Northampton.

His career would suggest he's a very decent league 1/2 level keeper. I still don't understand how he was so rubbish for us!

Oh and our former goalkeeping coach. I can’t remember his name but resembled the Michelin man

The odd thing is that he was not 'first choice' at Dover either .

I always thought there was a good goalkeeper in there-but agree-he was ok-but not great at FGR (and dover ) but seemed to do ok at gillingham(second choice there as well ),shrewsbury and possibly now northampton.

"Grimsby Town Football Club are pleased to announce that Goalkeeper, Sam Russell has signed a one-year extension at the club".

Good on you, Sam. I'm sure FGR fans will be very pleased for you.

Never thought Arnold was that bad for us. Just a combination of a couple of shaky performances early on and Russell being such a fan favourite that skewed perceptions a bit.

Agreed.

I did some calculations back then that showed that we averaged more points in the league with Steve in goal than Sam. It was the season where we narrowly made it into the play-offs (by one point) and had we continued averaging the number of points with Sam in Goal, rather than Steve, then that might not have happened.

He’s travelling all over Europe with hem but never seems to get on the pitch. Must be an interesting experience for a non-league player but I bet he’s itching to play one of these qualifiers

He'll do ok there I think. I hope he has an off day against us though.

Probably stay with Burton Albion, since he applied for extension there.

Would he have even wanted to come back here?

I doubt it very much.

About FGR

We’re a club that looks to the future, but our identity is forged from a rich 128-year history. Founded in 1889, we’re one of the oldest football clubs in the world.

In 2017, we were promoted to the Football League for the first time in our history – which means we can spread our sustainability message to an even bigger audience. FIFA recently described us as the greenest football club in the world. That’s quite an accolade, and it shows how we’ve been able to bring together football and environmental consciousness at the highest levels of the game.
